BMFA British National Model Flying Championships 2017 R/C Scale Event

Back from the Best Nationals Held at RAF Barkstone  heath  that  I  have  Ever    had  even though I  did  not  win  my class, Fantastic  weather 😃  ( Sun Burnt too )..  Great social evenings  with  CD  Chris Allen  Top chef & mine host, And mornings too  sharing my camping stove  With Alex Kennedy  & David Charles,  plenty of Banter & mirth to be had ...  I entered Flying only class this year with My Westland Wyvern that is modified from the artf  50cc  Black horse model, this one  is powered by a Laser 300V.  As my F4c Hawker Hurricane has not  yet been re maidened after it's rebuild following a landing accident .. Flying  wise  from my club I placed  3rd in the flying only class  with the Wyvern, My best mate Dave Knott entered F4c class  I was his flight option caller,  In a hard fought  contest that could have seen Dave Toyer, Mick Reeves, Dave  Womersley  Or John Carpenter  had his Static score been more realistic take the honours Dave Knott pulled it out of the bag in the final round  to secure the  F4c  Win,  is now  now British Scale National Champion again  with his Hawker  Hurricane ..

Flying Only round one Competition C.D. Chris Allen..

After the  8.30am morning briefing was over   we got ready for the 9am start time I was third on Dave Knott as  my flight options caller ..
Calm conditions "too calm"  the Wyvern likes a  Breeze, .. An  internal short in a servo  Ruined what started ok got a bit ragged in the middle,  the  End I got away with   running onto the far side of the runway To cap it all it was being filmed   ..   :banghead:   Got to work on the problem & replaced the servo, I was so glad that very recently changed from 6v ni-mh to a 8-15amp ubec & 2s  30c 3200  Lipo,  The lipo had drained from 100% to 55% in that one flight. I got the chance to fly again at the end of the comp that day  had a great flight & landing ..

                                                                      Day two

A much better  2nd flight slight breeze  about 45deg  across runway two 10s  for take off,  but called the  landing start point too late 7's, .... At the end of official  comp flying Demo & test flights continued in the late afternoon,  I got airborne & shared my Wyvern with Dave Knott we had a fun 17mins, I made the  Perfect curved approach  landing  tippy toe  type touch down (no pressure) see ..  Now  if only I can repeat that flight  in the final round!!

                                                                     Day three
Final rounds  Started with competitors  flying In reverse order  Of merit  depending on your first 2 flights Score  position .. these where off the number two  cross wind runway  due to the wind direction changing over night.
Flying only  group one started  then Stand off  scale  next  these  had the wind down the runway, (This was the only time I wished I  was 3rd to fly  ) the third group F4c  had horrible  conditions  increasing wind  during their round & direction  changing  yet  again, So the CD took the decision to revert back to the Main Runway again after the first  group of competitors  completed  their round ..
Now  for  many  final  results  & top spot all hinged on the last round The wind speed had  now very much increased  still slightly across  however was still within limits "just".. Improved my score, But that perfect 10 landing  just eluded me  however  I  pipped John Elkington,   But so did Dave Charles a very good flight  improved his  score by 110 passing me By 57.1 points,  he Just lost out first place with 6.5 points  I think in it,   Al foot won with a foam sea  Venom electric  ducted fan model  a  Big surprise to us all & wake up call  maybe .... That  win should encourage  a few more entry's to BMFA  Flying only comps to get  qualifying scores for Nationals entry one would hope ..    A few pics  the score board  is only 2 rounds  as it got put away  so missed out on the 3rd round marks ...

                                                           .................................
Finally, a big Thank you to my Competition Flying options caller.
"Best Mate & Friend David Knott."
                                      ......................................................................
                                                                Post  Comp Thoughts
                                                                ...................................

The only down side Was a Red flag system that would be raised Or waved if the model passed over the adjoining Pylon racing air space .. Very off putting , pilot could not see it,  & the caller could not have his eyes in two places  trying  to watch the plane & call out the manoeuvres  sometimes the person relaying flagging to the caller was not in place ether.. it was tricky for the flag waver too, You could really ruin someones day,  Those Pylon racers are moving at a high speed when rounding the Pylon on knife edge  looking like they are heading your way micro secs before performing  those tight turns, I know I did some flagging,  "an electronic answer maybe the best way to go.".. ...
                                          .....................................................................
C.D . Chris will be reviewing the current system with an eye on signalling  changes ...                                    making some proposals to the STC for a better system based on an audible signal to the pilot and the judges.

Above photo's of the  inner left  wheel well door  Refusing to close  😓 Very distracting during a competition  flight  .. great planview  shot though of the Wyverns underside ..
NB  on returning  home  & receiving these pics  I can see the wheel did not retract fully, the reason for this was the simulated  wheel jack  Rod  had  displaced & prevented full retraction , the wheel itself  had prevented the servo pulling up the inner door  so it stalled & failed ..   I had   removed the jack rod  when I was refitting the  replacement servo  after that first flight as the guide slide  rod was bent,  should have realised then thats what caused the failure!😥 ... (note to self) Don't be complacent  check then check again..

Pete Builds the Pica P 51 - D Mustang

Pica 1/5th near scale Mustang build  part one    Back in 2020 the start of  Covid lock down  I dug the Two 1/5th scale Pica kits I had tucked away in my garage One being the Mustang the other a Spitfire kit  bought years earlier, as I had just completed a 1/6th Mick Reeves MK16 spitfire  I choose to start the Mustang, some two years later  I  got to run up the Moki 210  Engine   in the  garden..  so here are pics taken during my build  not blow by blow,   Maybe not in the correct order, I  spent hours looking at Mustang pics & forums  and I came across  a complete  Mustang Build topic on  RCU build by Szempruw link   I found this to be of great help during my build, I know much about Spitfires, Hurricanes & Wyverns  etc,  If you read  my blog of  models I have built & they have all flown..  Very little Knowledge regards Mustangs  I never intended to do as much detail as I have, although  the cockpit is very sparse as regards all the levers & trimmings  can't be

R/C Westland Wyvern

My modified  Westland Wyvern  R/c model 1/6th(just under ) Standoff scale flying over the South Downs UK on finals  landing approach..   The engine is a Laser 300V f/s   Custom retracts are very near scale, These were made for me by an model engineering  friend John Pace ..   This model is a reworking of my first  ARTF  by Black Horse models  .. pretending to be an S4 Wyvern , but in fact its a low back  T1 fuz with a  S4 cowling,  jet exhaust outlet, canopy, & mk2 wing layout ..                Sporting new Static contra rotating Propellers 8 blades  Placed 3rd in stand off scale 2015 BMFA national, although I had the Highest flight score of the S/O class modified ARTFs can't compete with built models as the rules are stand at present..    at the prize giving  Bmfa Chairman  Chris Moynihan gave me his  personal thanks for impressing the dignities that    he was escorting  around the Nationals Scale flight line during my 3rd flight ..
